The Adelaide Hills is South Australia's cherry district, with orchards spread across Forest Range, Lenswood, Balhannah, Ashton, Charleston, Birdwood and Kersbrook — all within roughly 30 to 60 minutes of the Adelaide CBD. The concentration is unusually high: farms like Harben Vale Cherries, Ancara Estate, Marble Hill Cherries and Plummers Border Valley Orchards are close enough to visit two in a day without retracing the same road.

South Australia's cherry season typically runs from mid-November to mid-January, with December the most reliable peak across the Adelaide Hills. A few early orchards — including Charleston Cherries — open from late November, while most Adelaide Hills orchards concentrate their picking on December and the first weeks of January. Because a hot stretch can push ripening forward by a week or more, confirm picking status with the farm directly before you make the drive.

Most Adelaide Hills cherry farms are 30 to 50 minutes from the city centre via the South Eastern Freeway. Balhannah and Forest Range orchards tend to sit at the closer end — around 35 to 40 minutes — while Birdwood and Kersbrook are closer to 50 to 60 minutes. Weekend traffic on the freeway and through Crafers can add time in December, so allow a buffer when planning your start.

Policies vary by orchard. Harben Vale Cherries recommends booking, especially on weekends, and Cherrytime Orchard at Lobethal operates by private appointment only. Most other Adelaide Hills farms — including Ancara Estate, Marble Hill Cherries and Everlong Orchard — accept walk-ins, though smaller operations can close once that day's rows are picked through. Calling or checking social media the week of your visit is the simplest way to confirm both picking status and booking requirements.

Harben Vale Cherries charges $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12 (under 5 free), with cherries priced per kilogram on top. Other Adelaide Hills farms typically follow a similar entry-plus-weight model, though some smaller growers sell at a flat per-kilo rate with no separate gate fee. Call ahead for current pricing, as rates sometimes change through the season as different varieties come on.
