In September, strawberries, blueberries and citrus are picking across parts of New South Wales. We list 100 farms across 14 regions — browse by region below or filter by crop to find what's ripe near you.

New South Wales has one of the longest pick-your-own seasons in the country, with something ripening in almost every month. Bilpin & the Hawkesbury, about 90 minutes north-west of Sydney, is the closest berry and apple run for city families, while Orange & Central West and the Riverina & South Coast carry the state's cherry harvest through late spring and summer. The Central Coast turns out oranges, mandarins and paddocks of sunflowers, and the Coffs Coast keeps blueberries going through winter when other regions are quiet. Closer to the city, Sydney Basin orchards add citrus and stone fruit, and the Illawarra & Southern Highlands and Hunter Valley round out the smaller regional pockets. Many of these are working family farms, so booking ahead is common — check before you drive.

Through the year in New South Wales

Summer (December to February) is cherry season's peak across Orange & Central West, the Riverina & South Coast and the Hilltops district, with most orchards picking heaviest through December. Blueberries are in full swing on the Coffs Coast and around Bilpin & the Hawkesbury, and greenhouse strawberry growers in the Sydney Basin keep punnets coming through the warmer months. Sunflower fields open at Hunter Valley farms and paddocks near Bilpin, and Christmas tree farms across the Sydney Basin, Illawarra & Southern Highlands and Canberra surrounds start selling from late November into December.

Autumn (March to May) belongs to the apple orchards of Bilpin & the Hawkesbury, most of which pick from January through to May or June depending on variety. Persimmons colour up across the Sydney Basin and the Hilltops from April into early June, and chestnuts and walnuts are picked at Bilpin and in the Illawarra & Southern Highlands through March and April. Dahlia growers in the Illawarra & Southern Highlands bloom across the same window, making autumn as much a flower season as a fruit one.

Winter (June to August) is quieter statewide, but the Coffs Coast keeps blueberries coming when most other regions have finished, with picking there running from June through to November. Citrus takes over further south: Central Coast growers pick oranges from July, and Hunter Valley orchards add mandarins and lemons to the mix over the same cooler months. Fewer farms are open in winter, so calling ahead matters more than at any other time of year.

Spring (September to November) brings strawberries back at Bilpin & the Hawkesbury and Sydney Basin farms, usually from September onward, and the first cherries of the season start appearing on Orange & Central West, Riverina & South Coast and Hilltops trees from October and November. Flower and sunflower growers begin their bloom-dependent open days in spring too, with exact dates announced closer to picking. Because so much of spring depends on the weather, farm opening dates shift more in this season than any other.

What New South Wales is famous for picking

What to bring

Sturdy shoes, sun protection, a hat and your own containers cover most of it, and many NSW farms ask you to bring bags or boxes for what you pick — check the farm's own listing before you go. For a fuller rundown, see the what to bring fruit picking guide.

Frequently asked questions

When is fruit picking season in NSW?

There's no single season — NSW picking runs almost year-round across its regions. Cherries peak from November to January in Orange and the Riverina, apples run January to May in the Hawkesbury and Central West, and blueberries on the Coffs Coast pick from June to November. Strawberries are available somewhere in the state from September through to July most years.

Do I need to book to go fruit picking in NSW?

It depends on the farm. Larger orchards with casual walk-in picking are common on weekends in season, but many smaller family farms, especially berry and cherry growers, ask you to book a picking session in advance. Check the farm's own booking policy before you drive out, particularly on weekends and public holidays.

Can you pick fruit in NSW in winter?

Yes, though the choice is narrower. Blueberries are typically in season on the Coffs Coast from June to November, and some Sydney Basin growers along the Hawkesbury pick citrus such as mandarins and oranges from May to September. Most berry, cherry and stone fruit farms elsewhere in the state are closed until spring.

Where's the best region for strawberry picking in NSW?

Bilpin & the Hawkesbury is the go-to for Sydney families, with farms picking from September through into winter depending on the grower. Orange & Central West runs a slightly later cool-climate window, typically November to May, often alongside raspberries and mixed berries at the same farms. Always confirm the current picking status before heading out.

Where can I pick cherries in NSW?

Orange & Central West and the Riverina & South Coast are the state's main cherry districts, both typically picking from mid-November through to January, peaking in early-to-mid December. Both are a few hours' drive from Sydney, so many visitors combine cherry season with a weekend away. Call ahead, as cherry seasons are especially weather-sensitive.

How much does it cost to pick your own fruit in NSW?

Pricing is set by each farm rather than the site, but published NSW price lists show a consistent pattern. Fruit charged by weight typically runs from around $4 to $25 per kilogram, with strawberries and cherries usually toward the top of that range and citrus, figs and orchard fruit like apples nearer the bottom. Many farms also charge a small entry fee on top, commonly $5 to $20 per adult, while some — mostly berry and citrus growers — charge nothing beyond what you pick. Prices vary by farm and season, so call ahead to confirm before you visit.

How far from Sydney are the NSW pick-your-own farms?

It depends which region you're heading to. Bilpin & the Hawkesbury sits about 90 minutes north-west of the city, and Sydney Basin orchards are closer again, both realistic as a half-day or day trip. The Central Coast and Hunter Valley are a little further out but still commonly done in a day. Orange & Central West, the Riverina & South Coast and the Hilltops cherry country are several hours' drive, so most visitors treat those as a weekend trip rather than a quick outing.

What's the best month for variety when fruit picking in NSW?

December is hard to beat for choice. Cherry season is at its peak across Orange & Central West, the Riverina & South Coast and the Hilltops, blueberries are in full swing on the Coffs Coast and around Bilpin, and sunflower and Christmas tree farms are open at the same time. November runs a close second, with cherries and strawberries both usually underway by then. Outside these peak months the range narrows quickly, so check individual farm listings for what's actually ready before planning a trip.
