Ripe blueberries are fully deep blue-purple with a light silvery bloom, and should come away from the stem with a gentle roll rather than a tug — if it resists, leave it another day or two. Reddish or greenish berries won't sweeten once picked, so check the colour, not just the size. Pick into a shallow container so berries at the bottom don't get crushed.
