Pick your own — also written u-pick or PYO — means the grower opens their rows to visitors and you harvest the fruit, flowers or vegetables yourself, straight off the plant or tree. It is a working farm rather than an attraction, so what you can pick is decided by what happens to be ripe that week, and a row that was loaded last weekend can be stripped bare by the next. Short, intense harvests and farms within easy reach of a capital city tend to shift to timed sessions once the crowds find them, while smaller or more out-of-the-way growers take walk-ins all season without a booking page at all. Where you go matters more than which month you pick, because the states ripen on quite different clocks. As a rough shape in a normal year, southern berries and stone fruit run from spring through autumn, apples and pears carry the cooler end of the calendar, and South East Queensland's strawberry season fills the winter gap.
