A farm stay lets you slow down and join in. Every property below is more than a bed in the country — staying guests are genuinely offered a farm activity, whether that's feeding animals, collecting eggs, a guided property tour or seasonal picking.
Farm activities are usually for booked overnight guests and depend on the season and the day, so ask the operator what will be running during your stay before you book.
125 verified farm stays with activities experiences across 8 states, each checked against the farm's own sources.

New South Wales carries 44 farm stays with a genuine activity attached — the deepest list in the country and the most varied. Within easy reach of Sydney, Mowbray Park FarmStay at Picton runs a full program: feeding the donkey, goats, chickens and nursery animals, plus whip cracking, boomerang throwing and pony activities. In the Hunter, Starline Alpacas Farmstay at Broke pairs the stay with alpaca feeding and advertises public day visits in selected periods. Up on the Tweed, Hosanna Farmstay at Stokers Siding offers daily animal feeding, a walking farm tour and Meet the Bunnies sessions. Bilpin, Kangaroo Valley and the Southern Highlands add orchard and cottage stays where the farm work is quieter but still real.

Victoria's 15 listings lean towards small hosted properties in Gippsland, the Dandenongs and the goldfields rather than big station operations. Jilly Park Farmstay at Buln Buln is the clearest example of chores-as-the-attraction: guests join the daily feeding round, meet the animals and collect the eggs for their own breakfast. At Cockatoo, Fielderberry Farm runs Lottie's B&B year-round, with hosts who take guests out to feed the alpacas — worth confirming that the feeding is part of your booking. Sunny Acres Farm, Camping and Farmstay at Rushworth adds a camping option with guest animal feeding. Expect a handful of rooms rather than a resort, and book well ahead for school holidays.

The ACT has a single listing, and it is a specialist one. Beltana Farm at Pialligo — formerly Pialligo Truffles — runs a winter program of guided truffle hunts with trained dogs, long lunches, truffle kitchen masterclasses, twilight hunts and an opening-night festival, with a boutique farmstay on the property. Capacity is limited and booking is required. If you want a conventional feed-the-animals farm stay within driving distance of Canberra, look just over the border: Braidwood Farm Stay, Tiny Tails Farm Stay at Yass and JOY Miniature Donkey Stud Farm Stay at Bellmount Forest are all inside a comfortable day's reach.

The Northern Territory's listings are working cattle country rather than petting farms. Katherine Farmstay runs a daily feed round that takes in cattle, buffalo, horses, a camel, ostriches and saltwater crocodiles. Mount Bundy Station at Adelaide River is a small working Top End property where guests meet buffalo, pigs, donkeys and emus. At the premium end, Finniss River Lodge at Rakula runs guided buggy trips through cattle country and a Cows and Canapés sitting with its Brahman herd. Distances are long and many properties work to the dry season — confirm opening before you commit.

These listings are desk-checked against each farm's own website, booking page or official social channel on the date shown — we don't book, inspect or endorse them. Session times, prices and availability change with the season, so confirm directly with the farm, and follow their safety, hygiene and animal-contact instructions on the day.
Prices aren't quoted on a common basis — some farms charge per person, some per family, some per night, and some fold the experience into general farm entry. Of the 125 listings on this page, 8 publish an indicative price; the rest ask you to check with the operator. Each farm's own page shows the pricing note we hold and links out, so confirm the current figure before you book.
Farm stays with activities are the least standardised category on this site. Two properties an hour apart can mean completely different things by the word "farmstay" — one is a working dairy that will hand you a bucket at 6am, the other is a quiet cottage with a paddock view and a friendly alpaca. Three questions sort them quickly.
Two practical notes. Bringing the dog is rarely a given on a property with livestock — check the dog-friendly farms list rather than assuming. And if you are travelling with small children, our guide to farm days with kids covers the timing and stamina side of it.
Accommodation is available year-round at most of these properties, but the activity attached to it often is not. In a normal Australian year the pattern runs roughly like this.
Whatever the month, ring ahead. Weather moves feed rounds, mud closes tracks, and a working farm will always put the stock first — that is the trade you make for the real version. Our season calendar is a useful cross-check if you are timing a stay around a crop.
On-farm accommodation where staying guests are genuinely offered a farm activity -- animal feeding, egg collecting, chores or a tour. On this page we list 125 Australian farms offering farm stays with activities, each checked against the operator's own website, booking page or official social channel on the date shown.
We list 125 verified farm stays with activities farms across 8 states, grouped by state below. Availability and session times change with the season and the weather, so confirm directly with the farm before you travel — we don't book, inspect or endorse them.
Usually. Most farm stays with activities run on set session times, by appointment or as ticketed events, and any farm stays are booked ahead. Each listing shows its access type — walk-in, booking required, seasonal or by appointment — and links to the farm's own booking page where one exists.
It varies by farm and by what's included, and prices aren't quoted on a common basis — some are per person, some per family, some per night. Of the 125 farm stays with activities listings here, 8 publish an indicative price and the rest ask you to check directly with the operator. Each farm's own page shows the pricing note we hold for it, and links out to the farm so you can confirm the current figure before you book.
Usually not. Of the 131 listings here, 115 are marked booking required and another four only run the activity for guests who are staying — the activity is part of the accommodation product, not something sold at the gate. A handful are the exception: Iron Creek Bay Estate at Sorell charges $5 per person for animal feeding and waives it for in-house guests, Hosanna Farmstay at Stokers Siding sells a day pass alongside its stays, Starline Alpacas Farmstay at Broke advertises public day visits during selected periods, and Manbulloo Homestead Caravan Park near Katherine runs free animal-interaction tours on the homestead property. Everywhere else, phone first — day access tends to be a favour rather than a listed product, and turning up unannounced on a working property is the fastest way to be turned around.
They run to the animals' clock, not yours, which in practice means early morning and again in the late afternoon. Diamond Forest Farm Stay at Middlesex and Pump Hill Farm Cottages at Pemberton both build the day around a guest feed round; Katherine Farmstay's whole offering is one daily circuit of the cattle, buffalo, horses, camel, ostriches and crocodiles. The practical effect is that a late check-in can cost you the main event on your first day. Ask for the feeding time when you book, plan the drive around it, and if you are arriving with tired children, consider making the first night a short one and the morning the real start.
Closed-in shoes you do not mind ruining are the one non-negotiable — yards, paddocks and dairy sheds are not thong country, and several operators will not let children into the animal areas in open footwear. Beyond that: layers for a cold start even in the warmer months, a torch for unlit tracks between the cottage and the shed, sun protection, and any medication you rely on, because the nearest chemist can be an hour away. Many of these properties are self-catering, so check before you leave whether food, milk and firewood are supplied or whether you are bringing your own. Phone reception is patchy on a good number of them — download your directions before you turn off the highway.
