The Farm Clarendon Highland Cow Experiences lets visitors brush, feed and lead Highland cattle in a hosted, educational session, with booking essential. For something more specialised, Hallmark Farm Equine Retreat at Woodside pairs an overnight stay with watching Olympic-level horse training and meeting a miniature pony. Bungaree Station near Clare adds a heritage station-complex tour for guests staying over.

Western Australia's 23 listings cluster hard in the South West — Margaret River, Pemberton, Nannup and the karri country — with a second pocket through the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt. Diamond Forest Farm Stay at Middlesex is the classic family choice: a daily guided feed round taking in horses, alpacas, donkeys, goats, emus, pigs and rabbits, plus fishing and canoeing. Chestnut Brae near Nannup adds angora goats, pigs and chestnut tastings alongside a three-bedroom cottage.

Tasmania punches above its size with 14 farm stays, spread from the Huon and the Midlands to the north-west coast. Beltana Farm at Pialligo — formerly Pialligo Truffles — runs a winter program of guided truffle hunts with trained dogs, long lunches, truffle kitchen masterclasses, twilight hunts and an opening-night festival, with a boutique farmstay on the property. Capacity is limited and booking is required. If you want a conventional feed-the-animals farm stay within driving distance of Canberra, look just over the border: Braidwood Farm Stay, Tiny Tails Farm Stay at Yass and JOY Miniature Donkey Stud Farm Stay at Bellmount Forest are all inside a comfortable day's reach.

The Northern Territory's listings are working cattle country rather than petting farms. Katherine Farmstay runs a daily feed round that takes in cattle, buffalo, horses, a camel, ostriches and saltwater crocodiles. Mount Bundy Station at Adelaide River is a small working Top End property where guests meet buffalo, pigs, donkeys and emus.
