- Booking required
Feeding a lamb, collecting warm eggs or meeting a friendly cow is often a child's favourite part of a farm visit. The working farms below all offer a genuine, verified animal experience — from supervised feeding sessions and cow cuddles to alpaca walks and milking demonstrations — not a travelling petting zoo or a wildlife park.
Animals, session times and whether feeding is included change often, and some farms only open their animal areas on event days or to picking visitors. Always check the farm's own page before you travel, and follow their handwashing and animal-contact rules on the day.
202 verified animal encounters experiences across 8 states, each checked against the farm's own sources.

New South Wales carries 70 of the animal-encounter listings on this page, and the range is broader than anywhere else in the country. Iris Lodge Alpacas at Jilliby on the Central Coast is built around hand-feeding a large herd, while The Swallow's Nest at East Kangaloon runs Highland cattle grooming alongside horses, chickens and peacocks. Closer in, Calmsley Hill City Farm at Abbotsbury pairs animal patting with cow milking, shearing and working-dog demonstrations, which suits a family day without a long drive. Hosted Highland cattle sessions cluster in the Southern Highlands and out around Orange; farmstay feed rounds dominate the Hunter, New England and the Central West.

Victoria's 38 listings lean towards structured, ticketed farmyards within an hour or so of Melbourne, which makes it the easiest state for a spontaneous half-day. Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula listed $17 per person aged two and over, or $65 for a family of four. Collingwood Children's Farm at Abbotsford is a working community farm inside the city itself. Western Australia's 29 listings are dominated by the South West — Margaret River, Pemberton, Nannup and Denmark — and most are farmstays where the daily feed round comes with the cottage rather than being sold separately. Tasmania's 19 listings skew towards genuine working properties rather than petting farms, so the animals usually come wrapped in a tour. Curringa Farm at Hamilton combines shearing and working-dog demonstrations with feeding Highland cattle, a farm walk and scones — listed at $85 adult and $35 child with a four-adult minimum when checked. At the other end of the scale, Iron Creek Bay Estate at Sorell runs a $5 per person animal feeding that's complimentary for in-house guests, and Toffeemont Alpaca Farm Tours at Orielton keeps it to alpacas and farm education. The ACT has a single animal-encounter listing. Majura Valley Farm at Majura opens for seasonal sunflower visits that include an animal meet-and-greet, a farm shop and pick-your-own sunflower stems — free entry in 2026, with stems at $3 each and a maximum of five per adult. Because it runs to a short seasonal window rather than year-round hours, check the dates before you drive out. The practical alternative is to cross the border into surrounding New South Wales, where Alpaca Magic at Sutton, Babylon Farm at Wallaroo and Blackwattle Alpaca Farm at Murrumbateman are all comfortably inside a Canberra day trip.
Majura · Canberra Region
Seasonal sunflower maze/harvest visits include animal meet-and-greets, farm shop/food, walking the farm and pick-your-own sunflower stems.
The Northern Territory has five listings, and they look nothing like the southern petting farms — these are working stations and homesteads where meeting the animals is simply part of the property's day. Katherine Farmstay runs a daily feed round taking in cattle, buffalo, horses, a camel, ostriches and saltwater crocodiles. Mount Bundy Station at Adelaide River is a small working Top End cattle property with buffalo, pigs, donkeys and emus. Katherine Outback Experience sits closer to a show, built around live horse training and working-dog demonstrations. Most operate to the dry season, roughly May to September, so confirm before you travel.

Session times, prices and availability change with the season, so confirm directly with the farm, and follow their safety, hygiene and animal-contact instructions on the day.
Prices aren't quoted on a common basis — some farms charge per person, some per family, some per night, and some fold the experience into general farm entry. Of the 202 listings on this page, 39 publish an indicative price; the rest ask you to check with the operator. Each farm's own page shows the pricing note we hold and links out, so confirm the current figure before you book.
"Animal encounter" covers four fairly different things on this page, and the difference matters more than the price does. Roughly nine in ten of the listings here ask you to arrange something in advance, but what you are arranging varies a lot — a cottage booking, an hour-long hosted session, or a gate ticket. Working out which shape you want first will save you a wasted drive.
| Shape | What it actually is | Best for | Example from this page |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guest-only feed round | The daily feeding of the property's animals, included with your stay. Not sold to day visitors. | Families wanting a weekend away rather than an outing | Diamond Forest Farm Stay, Middlesex WA |
| Hosted single-species session | A booked hour or two with one animal — Highland cattle, alpacas, llamas, donkeys or goats — usually with brushing, feeding and a guide who knows them by name. | Adults and older kids; photos; people who want depth over variety | The Swallow's Nest, East Kangaloon NSW |
| Ticketed farmyard | A gate price, a bag of feed and a set of paddocks you walk at your own pace, often with milking shows or tractor rides bolted on. | Younger children, larger groups, shorter attention spans | Chesterfield Farm, Scoresby VIC |
| Add-on at a picking farm | Animals kept alongside an orchard or berry patch, usually free or a couple of dollars for feed once you're through the gate. | Anyone already going picking who wants a second thing to do | Rayner's Orchard, Woori Yallock VIC |
The first two are the ones people most often get wrong. A farmstay listing that mentions feeding goats every morning is describing something for people sleeping there — ringing up and asking to drop in usually gets a polite no. If you want a day visit, look for listings that name a product and a duration. Our farm stays and farm tours pages sort the same farms a different way if that's the angle you're coming from.
Most encounters run to the animals' timetable, not yours. Farmstay feed rounds tend to happen early, hosted sessions run to a fixed start time, and a farmyard's bottle-feeding demonstration might happen once or twice a day rather than whenever you arrive. Ask for the actual time when you book, not just the opening hours.
Season changes the offer more than it changes the opening hours. In a normal year, lambs, calves and kids arrive across the southern states from late winter into spring, which is when bottle-feeding turns up on the list at farms like Denmark Animal Farm & Pentland Alpaca Stud and Flagrock Farmstay. Through the hottest months, sessions often move to early morning or late afternoon because the animals shelter in the middle of the day. In the Top End, most station and homestead visits run through the dry season, roughly May to September, and go quiet in the wet. Shearing and working-dog demonstrations depend on the farm's own work calendar, so a property may or may not have one on when you visit.
Two honest caveats. Weather cancels sessions, particularly the outdoor walking ones — llama treks and paddock tours don't run in a downpour. And animals have off days; a herd that mobbed the fence last visit may keep its distance this time. Ring the day before, and if you're bringing small children, the picking with kids guide and what to bring both carry over well to a farm-animal day.
Feed, pat or meet working-farm animals -- lamb feeding, cow cuddles, egg collecting, milking demonstrations and alpaca walks. Usually. Most animal encounters run on set session times, by appointment or as ticketed events, and any farm stays are booked ahead. Each listing shows its access type — walk-in, booking required, seasonal or by appointment — and links to the farm's own booking page where one exists.

As a rule, no — bring your wallet instead of a loaf of bread. Farms manage what their animals eat, and the wrong feed can cause real harm, so almost every property that allows hand-feeding sells an approved cup or bucket for a small amount at the gate. Prices sighted on this page's listings ranged from about $1 to $5 for a serve. There are occasional exceptions where the farmer directs it — Watkins Family Farm at Laughtondale, for instance, has been known to have visitors feed mandarins to the sheep — but that is the farmer's call to make, not yours. If in doubt, ask at the gate and follow whatever they say.
Usually not, and this is the single most common mix-up on this page. A large share of the listings here are accommodation properties where the morning feed round is a perk for people in the cottages — the farm has no gate, no staff rostered for day visitors and no public liability set up for it. A few operators do sell both: Chestnut Brae near Nannup runs bookable tours and workshops as well as a cottage, and Starline Alpacas Farmstay at Broke advertises public day visits during selected periods. The tell is whether the listing names a separate product with a time and a price. If it only describes what guests do, assume you need to book a night.
Many are, but choose the format carefully rather than assuming. Ticketed farmyards are the safest bet for under-fives — animals are in contained paddocks, staff supervise the feeding, and nobody minds if you leave after forty minutes. Hosted Highland cattle and horse sessions are a different proposition: these are large animals, the pace is slower, and some operators price them for pairs or adults rather than families. Smaller-species sessions sit nicely in between, whether that's the goat cuddles at Gotta Goat Farm in Tasmania or the miniature donkeys at Pine Ridge Miniature Donkeys in the Southern Highlands. Tell the operator the ages when you book — most will steer you honestly.
