New South Wales carries 70 of the animal-encounter listings on this page, and the range is broader than anywhere else in the country. Victoria's 38 listings lean towards structured, ticketed farmyards within an hour or so of Melbourne, which makes it the easiest state for a spontaneous half-day. Chesterfield Farm at Scoresby was around $22 adult and $15 child with feed about $3 when checked, and adds a cow-milking show, calf feeding and a sheepdog demonstration. Rain Hayne & Shine Farmyard at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula listed $17 per person aged two and over, or $65 for a family of four. Collingwood Children's Farm at Abbotsford is a working community farm inside the city itself. Smaller alpaca, llama and Highland cattle sessions sit further out through the Yarra Valley and Macedon Ranges.

Queensland's 30 listings concentrate in the Scenic Rim and the Sunshine Coast hinterland, with hosted dairy, camel and farmstay operations that let visitors get hands-on. Cedar Glen Farmstay at Darlington in the Scenic Rim runs animal feeding, milking and egg-collecting sessions for staying guests. Summer Land Camels at Harrisville is a working camel dairy where entry is free and tours, rides and feed are paid extras, while QCamel at Bells Creek listed $35 adult, $20 child and $110 family when checked. Farmstays through the Darling Downs and South Burnett add guest feed rounds, though those are generally for overnight guests only.

South Australia packs 19 listings into a compact area, most of them within an hour of Adelaide through the Hills and down the Fleurieu. Tasmania's 19 listings skew towards genuine working properties rather than petting farms, so the animals usually come wrapped in a tour. Curringa Farm at Hamilton combines shearing and working-dog demonstrations with feeding Highland cattle, a farm walk and scones — listed at $85 adult and $35 child with a four-adult minimum when checked. At the other end of the scale, Iron Creek Bay Estate at Sorell runs a $5 per person animal feeding that's complimentary for in-house guests, and Toffeemont Alpaca Farm Tours at Orielton keeps it to alpacas and farm education. Expect real driving between the Huon, the Derwent Valley and the north-west, and cold, wet weather in any month.

The ACT has a single animal-encounter listing. Majura Valley Farm at Majura opens for seasonal sunflower visits that include an animal meet-and-greet, a farm shop and pick-your-own sunflower stems — free entry in 2026, with stems at $3 each and a maximum of five per adult. Because it runs to a short seasonal window rather than year-round hours, check the dates before you drive out. The practical alternative is to cross the border into surrounding New South Wales, where Alpaca Magic at Sutton, Babylon Farm at Wallaroo and Blackwattle Alpaca Farm at Murrumbateman are all comfortably inside a Canberra day trip.

The Northern Territory has five listings, and they look nothing like the southern petting farms — these are working stations and homesteads where meeting the animals is simply part of the property's day. Katherine Farmstay runs a daily feed round taking in cattle, buffalo, horses, a camel, ostriches and saltwater crocodiles. Mount Bundy Station at Adelaide River is a small working Top End cattle property with buffalo, pigs, donkeys and emus. Most operate to the dry season, roughly May to September, so confirm before you travel.
