Pick Your Own Farms

Pick your own fruit farms in Western Australia

Most of Western Australia's u-pick action is within an hour of Perth. Swan Valley, just north-east of the city, is the state's strawberry heartland, with a run of small family farms around Wanneroo, Gnangara and Carabooda picking from around August through to summer. Up in the Perth Hills, orchards around Carmel and Pickering Brook add cherries in late spring, then stone fruit over summer, before a long autumn-into-winter apple season that's typically ready now in July. Further south, the South West around Donnybrook, Manjimup and Margaret River grows apples, blueberries and specialty crops like chestnuts and truffles. Picking is seasonal and weather-dependent across all three areas, so call the farm to check what's ripe before you drive out.

Frequently asked questions

When is fruit picking season in Western Australia?

It changes through the year. Swan Valley strawberries typically run August to December, Perth Hills cherries are a short late-November to December window, and Perth Hills apples stretch from January right through to July, so apples are usually the pick in the middle of winter. The South West adds blueberries around October to January and truffles in winter. Always check with the farm first.

Do I need to book to go fruit picking in WA?

It varies. Some Perth Hills orchards, including The Fruit Corner, ask visitors to book ahead or check opening days, while several Swan Valley strawberry farms operate on a casual walk-in basis, especially on weekends. Truffle Hill in Manjimup typically requires a booked hunt. Confirm directly with the farm, as rules can tighten during busy periods.

Where can I pick strawberries near Perth?

Swan Valley is the go-to area, with farms around Wanneroo, Gnangara and Carabooda such as Ti Strawberry Farm, Kien's Strawberry Farm and Aida Strawberry Farm typically open from around August through to early summer. Windows differ farm to farm, with some starting as early as late July and others running into January, so it's worth checking a couple of options before you drive out.

Where can I pick cherries in WA?

The Perth Hills, particularly around Carmel and Karragullen, are WA's main cherry-growing area. Farms including Carmel Cherry Farm and Mr Peter Orchard Farm typically pick from late November into December, a short season that can finish early in a hot year. It's the kind of crop worth calling ahead about rather than assuming it's still going.

What can you pick in the South West of WA?

The South West around Donnybrook and Manjimup grows apples typically from March to May, plus blueberries around Margaret River from about December to February. The Manjimup and Pemberton area also has more unusual picking, including chestnuts in autumn and truffles through winter at farms like Truffle Hill. It's a longer drive from Perth, so plan for a couple of hours each way.
