Flower picking in New South Wales

In July, flower picking is in season in New South Wales. We list 22 farms, across Central Coast and Bilpin & the Hawkesbury — compare them below and call ahead to confirm what's ripe.

NSW has the most diverse flower-picking farms of any state, spread from the Central Coast and Hunter Valley in the north to the Illawarra and Southern Highlands in the south. Unlike sunflower-only operations — which typically run a single-species season in summer — most NSW flower farms offer a rotating mix of varieties across the year: dahlias, zinnias, lavender, sweet peas and poppies sit alongside sunflowers, so the picking calendar here is broader. Hunter Valley Sunflowers (around $5 entry, booking recommended) is one of the state's busiest flower experiences. Valley View Flower Farm near Orange structures its sessions as a You-Pick vase format ($40 for a small vase of about 20 stems). The Illawarra and Southern Highlands add The Dahlia Patch Flower Farm and Southern Highlands Flower Farm (a Golden Hour bouquet experience from ~$100/person). On the Northern Rivers, Farm & Co at Cudgen charges $4–$5 per stem with no booking needed.

Flower availability is seasonal and highly weather-dependent — a farm that had abundant dahlias in April may have nothing but dried stalks in May. Most farms run ticketed sessions (particularly through spring and early summer) and sell out on fine weekends, so booking ahead or checking social media the week of your visit is strongly recommended.

Frequently asked questions

Where can you pick flowers in NSW?

NSW flower farms are spread across several regions: Central Coast (Horseshoe Valley Farm & Apiary, The Bloom Barn, The Food Farm, S&S Peruch, Weeping Willow Farm, The Giving Farm), Hunter Valley (Hunter Valley Sunflowers, Little Tin Shed Medowie), Illawarra & Southern Highlands (The Dahlia Patch, Southern Highlands Flower Farm), Orange/Central West (Valley View Flower Farm), Northern Rivers (Farm & Co, Poppy & Fern) and Coffs Coast (Blooms and Coos). See the farm table above for current booking details.

When can you pick flowers in NSW?

The flower-picking calendar in NSW depends heavily on which variety each farm grows. Sunflowers peak in summer (December–February). Dahlias and zinnias are at their best in autumn (March–May). Lavender and sweet peas run through spring (September–November). Some farms rotate varieties and are open most of the year; others run short seasonal windows. Check each farm's current status and Instagram before making the drive.

How much does flower picking cost in NSW?

Pricing ranges widely. Farm & Co charges $4–5 per stem with no entry fee. Hunter Valley Sunflowers charges around $5 adult entry plus picking costs. Valley View Flower Farm sells a Small Vase for $40 (~20 stems) and larger formats from there. Southern Highlands Flower Farm's Golden Hour Experience is approximately $100/person. The Food Farm at Erina operates on an honesty box with $1/stem sunflowers. Always confirm pricing when you book.

Do I need to book flower picking in NSW?

Most NSW flower farms require or strongly recommend booking, particularly on weekends and through peak seasons. The Dahlia Patch, Southern Highlands Flower Farm, Horseshoe Valley, Little Tin Shed and Blooms and Coos all list booking as required. Farm & Co and The Food Farm at Erina are walk-in friendly. Weekends at popular farms fill up fast — book at least a few days ahead during peak months.
