Citrus picking near Newcastle is a Central Coast specialty, centred around Somersby, Peats Ridge, Dooralong and Kulnura. Winter is peak season here — navel oranges, mandarins, lemons and limes are typically ready from June through September, with July and August the strongest stretch, so a visit right now lines up well with the district's main picking window. Valencia oranges follow later, into autumn.
Most of these farms sit within about 90 minutes of Newcastle through the hinterland behind the Central Coast. Pick Your Own Oranges at Dooralong (also known as Cedar Farm) is a good place to start, with a coffee cart and sausage sizzle on site alongside its pay-for-what-you-pick oranges, priced per kilogram or by the bag. Bring warm layers for an early start, since winter mornings in the hinterland can be crisp, and call ahead, as some smaller growers only open on weekends in season.

The Central Coast hinterland around Somersby, Peats Ridge, Dooralong and Kulnura is the main citrus-picking district within reach of Newcastle, mostly growing navel and valencia oranges, mandarins and lemons. It's a smaller scene than the strawberry or apple trail, but the orchards sit close together, so a single trip can take in more than one farm if you plan the route in advance.
The Central Coast citrus orchards around Somersby and Peats Ridge are roughly 45 minutes to an hour south of Newcastle, mostly via the Pacific Highway and Peats Ridge Road. It's a straightforward drive through rural hinterland rather than heavy traffic, though winter fog can linger in the valleys early in the morning, so give yourself a little extra time on a cold start.
Winter is the main citrus season here, with navel oranges, mandarins, lemons and limes typically ready from June through September and peaking in July and August — so this is prime picking time. Valencia oranges follow with a longer window from December into autumn. Because timing depends on the variety and the weather, call the farm to check what's actually ripe before you drive out.
Most farms charge for what you pick rather than an entry fee — Pick Your Own Oranges at Dooralong prices per kilogram or by the bag at the gate. A few orchards don't publish pricing at all, so it's worth asking when you call to confirm opening hours and current rates.
