Nectarine picking near Sydney is centred on two orchard districts within about 90 minutes of the CBD: the Hawkesbury around Bilpin, and the Illawarra and Southern Highlands around Darkes Forest and Thirlmere, with a further orchard out at Canoelands in the Sydney Basin. Across these growers the nectarine and peach season runs November through February, peaking December-January, so a summer visit gives you the best chance of a full range of stone fruit alongside apples and plums.
Pricing is generally pay-by-weight, from around $4.50-$6 a kilo at the cheaper end up to a small per-person entry fee at farms that also run a family day out. Bilpin Fruit Bowl is a well-known standout, a long-running Hawkesbury orchard that's pay-for-what-you-pick across apples, peaches, nectarines and vegetables, making it an easy one-stop trip. Ripening shifts with the season's rain and heat, so call ahead to check nectarines are ready before you drive up the mountain.

The Hawkesbury district around Bilpin has several orchards, including Bilpin Fruit Bowl and Pine Crest Orchard, both growing nectarines alongside apples and other stone fruit. South of Sydney, Glenbernie Orchard at Darkes Forest and Cedar Creek Orchard at Thirlmere pick nectarines through the Illawarra and Southern Highlands, and Canoelands Orchard in the Sydney Basin rounds out the options.
Bilpin is about 90 minutes north-west of the CBD via Richmond, while Darkes Forest and Thirlmere in the Illawarra and Southern Highlands are a similar distance south, off the M1 or via Picton. Canoelands, in the Sydney Basin, is closer at around an hour. All are comfortable half-day or full-day trips without an overnight stay.
Across both the Hawkesbury and Illawarra/Southern Highlands orchards, nectarines and peaches are typically ready from November through February, with December and January the most reliable peak. Some Bilpin orchards extend general stone-fruit picking a little later into autumn. Because ripening depends on the season's weather, it's worth calling the orchard the week before your visit.
Most of these orchards, including Bilpin Fruit Bowl and Pine Crest Orchard, run as casual pay-for-what-you-pick visits without a booking requirement, so you can generally just turn up during opening hours. It's still worth a quick call first, especially on weekends in peak season, to confirm nectarines are currently being picked and the orchard hasn't sold out for the day.
