Pears are an autumn crop across most of Australia, typically ready a little ahead of or alongside apples at the same orchards. South Australia's Adelaide Hills has the earliest picking, with organic pears at Paracombe usually ready from late February into March. The bulk of the country follows close behind: NSW's Hawkesbury-Bilpin district, the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges in Victoria, Queensland's Granite Belt and Perth Hills in WA all run roughly February to April, peaking March. The ACT's Pialligo orchards and Tasmania's multi-fruit farms pick a touch later, into April and May. Because pears are usually grown as a side crop alongside apples, seasons and picking days can be shorter and less heavily promoted, so it pays to ring ahead and ask what's actually ready. Pricing is typically pay-by-weight, roughly $4 to $7 a kilogram, with some orchards charging a small entry or bucket-hire fee of around $5 to $7 on top.

Unlike most fruit, pears are best picked slightly under-ripe and firm, then left to ripen off the tree at room temperature over several days to a week. A pear is ready to pick when it separates from the branch with a gentle lift and twist, rather than needing to be pulled or cut. Once picked, store them in the fridge to slow ripening, or on the bench if you want them ready to eat within a few days.

Pear picking generally runs from late February through to May, depending on region. Adelaide Hills orchards such as Paracombe start earliest, from late February into March. Most of the Hawkesbury-Bilpin district, Yarra Valley, Granite Belt and Perth Hills pick February to April, peaking in March, while the ACT and Tasmania often run into April and May as pears ripen alongside apples.
Pears are usually priced by weight, commonly $4 to $7 a kilogram. Paracombe Premium Perry in the Adelaide Hills charges $4 a kilogram for pears picked, while Tanbella Orchard near Canberra charges around $7 a kilogram plus a bucket rental fee of about $7. A handful of orchards don't publish exact rates online, so it's worth asking when you call to check availability.
Yes. The Bilpin district in the Hawkesbury, about 60 to 90 minutes from the Sydney CBD, has several multi-fruit orchards including Pine Crest Orchard, Bilpin Springs Orchard and 4 Winds Farm that grow pears alongside apples over a similar February-to-April window. Pears are usually a smaller side crop at these farms, so call ahead to confirm they're currently picking.
Yes. The Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges, roughly an hour from the Melbourne CBD, have orchards growing pears alongside apples from February into April, with Rayner's Orchard at Woori Yallock among the growers. As with other autumn fruit, pear picking days can be limited, so a quick call before you drive out is worthwhile.
Often, yes. Most Australian pick-your-own orchards grow pears as a smaller companion crop to apples, on the same property and over a similar autumn window. That means many farms don't run pears as a standalone attraction, and picking days can be shorter or less publicised, so ring the orchard directly to check whether pears are ready alongside the apples.
