MacGillivray · Kangaroo Island
tour a working eucalyptus-oil operation; see historic and modern production; learn how local mallee is harvested and distilled
- Access
- Booking required
Kangaroo Island, off the coast of South Australia's Fleurieu Peninsula, is one of the country's great food and farming islands, and its farm-gate experiences reflect that. Visit the Island Beehive and Kangaroo Island Living Honey to see how the island's pure Ligurian bees are kept, walk the working Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery, or stay on a farm at Solstice Kangaroo Island with its animals to meet.
These are hands-on farm experiences rather than pick-your-own produce, reached by ferry from Cape Jervis or by a short flight from Adelaide. Session times, tours and tastings change with the season, so book ahead and confirm what's running before you cross.

The island's listings centre on its honey and eucalyptus story: guided looks at how pure Ligurian bee honey is produced at the Island Beehive and Kangaroo Island Living Honey, the working Emu Ridge Eucalyptus Oil Distillery, and a farm stay with animals at Solstice Kangaroo Island. Each is a booked or scheduled experience rather than a walk-in pick-your-own.
Usually yes. Most of the island's farm tours, tastings and stays run to set times or by booking, and ferry timetables mean planning your day matters. Check each farm's own page for current session times and book before you travel.
The island is reached by vehicle ferry from Cape Jervis on the Fleurieu Peninsula (about a 45-minute crossing) or by a short flight from Adelaide. Once there you'll need a car to reach the farms, which are spread across the island.
